As part of a methodological approach that began in the late 1970s, John Hassell has built three comprehensive databases of company earnings and projections reports in an effort to study the issue of voluntary disclosures by company management. Publishing his first research papers on the subject in the mid-1980s, Hassell has explored the effects of financial forecasts and voluntary disclosures on the stock market.

Using surveys, behavioral research techniques and experiments, Hassell has also concentrated his research efforts on analyzing how company auditors make decisions. Additionally, he is an instrumental researcher in the area of accounting education, helping to determine new and better teaching methods and assessing the impact of technology on teaching, and the role and effectiveness of various distance-learning models.

During his career, Hassell has published widely and also serves frequently as a speaker and presenter at national meetings and workshops. He served as interim dean of Kelley Indianapolis from January 2002 to June 2003.

"Kelley Indianapolis' reputation as an interdisciplinary group of researchers sets us apart from other faculties," Hassell says. "Our workshops facilitate cross-disciplinary discussion of research projects, which has led to collaboration among professors from different disciplines. Ultimately, this has resulted in several very interesting pieces of research."
