Jill Margetts wanted a top-ranked business school and had considered commuting to the University of Chicago or Northwestern University for her MBA. In the end, Margetts, an associate with private equity firm Centerfield Capital Partners, chose Kelley for its reputation, convenience and value.

“I use what I learned at Kelley every day,” says Margetts, a 2007 Evening MBA graduate who completed her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at MIT. “The program truly teaches the skills you need to know to be successful.”

After graduating from MIT in 2000, Margetts went to work as a process engineer for a medical device company in Boston. Her husband’s work with Rolls-Royce eventually brought the couple and their family to Indianapolis. Interested in transitioning back into the workforce possibly with a career in finance or engineering management, Margetts believed earning an MBA was the next logical step. Carefully weighing her options, she enrolled at Kelley.

“To Kelley’s credit, if you want connections in Indianapolis, an IU degree is the way to go,” says Margetts. “A Kelley business degree carries a lot of credibility.”

Margetts enjoyed studying finance at Kelley, soon realizing a career in that arena was the path she wanted to pursue. Obtaining practical experience in her new field was crucial, and after introducing herself to some of the partners at Centerfield after a presentation at Kelley, Margetts interviewed for and accepted an internship with the firm in August 2006. The internship position was created as a joint project between Centerfield and the Kelley school’s Finance Development (FIND) enterprise, under the direction of Prof. Steve Jones. Upon completion of the internship, Margetts was offered a full-time position with Centerfield in July 2007.

A mother of three, Margetts has a wide range of responsibilities at the Indianapolis-based firm, including analyzing potential investment opportunities from both a financial and qualitative standpoint, facilitating the investment process and tracking the performance of the firm’s existing investments.

Reflecting on her time at Kelley, Margetts expresses high praise for her colleagues in the Evening MBA program.
