The First Year Experience
Immerse yourself in the Business Environment
The gateway into the Kelley School of Business involves our 2-course first year experience.
Introduction to Business
The first class that students should take is BUS X100 – Introduction to Business Administration or BUS X105 (Honors). This course covers all aspects of business: accounting, finance, management, human resource management, marketing, and supply chain management. In addition, the basics of the capital raising process are discussed. BUS X105 also offers a trip to New York City where students have the opportunity to visit the New York Stock Exchange!
Business Learning Community
Taking BUS X103 is vital to your experience at Kelley. Taught by an instructional team including faculty, academic advisor, peer mentor, and librarian, this course is a great introduction to university life and Kelley. Community service, networking, writing and public speaking are emphasized in this course.
Road Trip!
Are you ready to jump-start your college experience? This 2 credit hour BUS X103 offers a 3 day pre-semester program where students participate in leadership activities, meet with local companies, and complete a service project. Throughout the semester, students take “road-trips” to local companies to meet executives in their field of interest. Last year, students interacted with the following companies and organizations:
- Brightpoint, Inc.
- Cabello Associates, Inc.
- Katz, Sapper, & Miller, LLP
- Pratt Corporation
- Rebuilding The Wall, Inc.
- Reebok/Adidas Group
Why these two courses together?
This combination of courses provides the new or relatively new student with a variety of benefits:
- A firm foundation of basic theory in the major content areas of business study,
- Communications and other skills necessary to succeed in the college environment and the wider world,
- A sense of the obligations of citizenship by means of a service project carried out in the local community.
