H-Option

Eligibility

The H-Option is designed for students who are unable to fulfill their Honors elective requirement by taking IUPUI approved Honors courses. The student must be unable to take a regularly offered Honors course due to schedule conflicts, graduation requirements or another approved reason. H-Options are not meant as substitutes for regularly offered Honors courses.

An approved H-Option will count toward the Honors student's Honors graduation requirements. The number of credit hours applied toward the student's Honors graduation requirements will be equal to the credit hours received for the course (ie: a 3 hour course taken as an H-Option will count as 3 credit hours Honors elective requirements).

Important Notes
The course will not be listed as an Honors course on the student's diploma.
H-Options cannot be used in place of any of the six required Kelley School of Business courses. Very few exceptions apply on a case-by-case basis.

Structure

H-Option courses allow students to design an Honors experience in select courses with individual faculty. Students enroll in regularly offered IUPUI courses and work closely with the instructor to design a project, research paper, or another indepth, independent study option that builds on, yet goes beyond, material regularly covered in the course.

An H-Option is also defined as a contract between the student, instructor and the Kelley Honors Program to complete an additional project for a course which goes beyond the typical requirements of an undergraduate course.

  • The exact structure of the project can vary. Typical projects include in-depth research, formal papers and oral presentations, but H-Options can take on various forms.
  • An H-Option does not free the student from any regular class work and the H-Option is not included as part of the student's course grade.
  • The student is responsible for coming to an H-Option agreement with the Instructor of the course. Instructors are not required to agree to supervise an H-Option project.

Evaluation

H-Option are not graded. At the end of semester, the Instructor must determine whether or not the student has successfully completed the agreed upon H-Option project.

In order for the H-Option to be recorded successfully, the following conditions must be met:

  • The student must complete the regular coursework with a grade of B or above
  • The professor must send email confirmation to the Honors Program that the student has successfully completed the H-Option. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that this email is sent.
